The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.
The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
