British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.
The site, located using intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of entry passages down to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.
British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," he said. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."
Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. estimates Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
