Shifting from Praise to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Disclosure is Mixed.

Right-leaning responses to the limited release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how heavy redactions portray former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.

Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole

Justice Department officials justified the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter outlining the censorship procedure.

Concerns Prompted by Redactions

While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt serious concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly called for greater openness.

“People are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.

A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Release

But, some rightwing pundits and former President loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.

The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.

But some are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled some rightwing figures to launch the attack.

“It’s pretty ironic how the political left wrongly accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.

“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”

Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement

Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing these files for months only to dump them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.

“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response concluded.

Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Muted

Nonetheless, overall discourse on the political right was comparatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that came before the congressional approval to pass a law requiring the files' release.

Loomer, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were provided physical binders of files that included little previously unseen information.
